Mila Gojsalić,a folk heroine, from the village Kostanje in the Dalmatian hinterland lived at the time of the Ottoman wars. She died in 1530.
In 1530 the Ottoman Ahmed Pasha gathered an army of 10,000 men in order to win Poljica. He made a camp in Gata (Podgorac).
Mila Gojsalić voluntarily sacrificed and lost her virginity with Ahmed Pasha in order to penetrate the Turkish camp and blow up stocks of ammunition, killing Ahmed Pasha and many officers and soldiers. This act has completely surprised and confused the rest of the Turkish soldiers who then escaped from Poljica.
Bronze statue of Mile Gojsalić was made by Ivan Mestrović.
The statue is located above Omiš, in the village of Gata, at the very edge of the cliff overlooking the canyon of the river Cetina.
